What I Wish I Knew Before Adopting My First Cat

🐾 What I Wish I Knew Before Adopting My First Cat

😻 The “Oops—I’m Getting a Cat” Moment

I hadn’t planned to adopt. I was just browsing shelter listings when I saw her—sleeping in a laundry basket. My heart said, “Yes,” before my brain could say, “Hold on.”

That’s how adopting starts. Cute → impulsive → life-changing.

🏠 Step 1: Cat-Proof (Without Going Overboard)

I remember thinking I needed a full renovation. Solution? No.

  • I cleared one quiet room.

  • Put in food, water, soft bedding.

  • Hid the cords and secured toxic plants.

It felt simple. Just a safe landing spot.

🧩 Step 2: Know What You’re Truly Signing Up For

Your cat is not a “mini dog.”
Mine could sleep 18 hours. She could also zoom at midnight. Both were normal once I got to know her.

Tip: Ask the shelter about her habits. High-energy? Lap-lover? It matters.

🛒 Step 3: The Essentials Bag

Here’s what really helps:

  • Food bowls & litter box

  • Litter (same type the shelter used)

  • One fun toy

  • Scratching post (trust me)

  • A secure carrier

Forget anything? You’ll run to the store mid-cat meltdown. Been there.

🕰 Day One Doesn’t Mean “Sit On My Lap”

She hid. For 20 minutes, I thought something was wrong. But that’s normal.

I gave her space. I sat quietly nearby. I whispered, “Welcome.”
The next day? She curled up beside me.

Patience works wonders.

🩺 Step 4: First Vet Visit = A Must

Even if the shelter said she was “healthy,” I took her in.

  • Checked vaccinations

  • Talked spay/neuter

  • Micropchip (so worth it)

Now I’m not worrying about surprises—they’re covered.

💡 Final Gift: Be Kind to Yourself

Did I forget to clean her box on day two? Yes.
Did I overreact at 3 AM zoomies? Definitely.
But she forgave me with purrs and nose boops.

Adoption is messy and real. It’s not perfect—but it’s perfect for both of you.
